The Heritage Interpretation Visualization and Experience (HIVE) Lab [NL1] is one of the Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage's research laboratories. It is based on the LMU München, Akademiestr. 7, Room 314.

The lab is home to an interdisciplinary group of researchers at the graduate and undergraduate levels. HIVE Lab members investigate a broad range of topics, including digital heritage, digital archaeology, remote sensing for heritage diagnostics, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). The HIVE Lab is dedicated to advancing knowledge and methods in heritage preservation and geospatial technology with a global perspective. Our mission is to understand how technologies shape cultural awareness and foster participation in the protection of natural and cultural resources, both in Europe and worldwide.

The HIVE Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art tools such as small UAS, laser scanners, thermal I/R cameras, VR and A/R headsets, and advanced data processing and analysis software. With these resources, HIVE Lab members pioneer data science methods and workflows for fieldwork, analysis, visualization, and simulation of heritage data.

Thanks to their advanced VRAM capabilities, our powerful computers can render and manipulate complex 3D settings. They are also used to load, fine-tune, and train computationally intensive machine learning models, including large language models.
