Munich, Germany – March 25, 2025 — Cutting-edge technology met ancient history as participants of the Winter School: Methods in Digital Heritage joined our team at the State Museum of Egyptian Art (SMAEK) for an immersive, hands-on 3D scanning workshop. Armed with the state-of-the-art Artec Leo scanner, students digitally captured intricate details of ancient statuettes, funerary masks, and vividly painted wall fragments—transforming artifacts thousands of years old into high-fidelity digital twins in mere minutes.

This dynamic training session marked a milestone in our ongoing partnership with SMAEK. While the Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage Studies has collaborated with the museum on digitization projects in the past—including work on ancient Egyptian coffins and statues—this was the first time students actively participated in on-site scanning within the museum’s galleries.

The session concluded with a private, guided tour of SMAEK’s stunning permanent collection, offering participants a rare and inspiring look at one of Europe’s most renowned collections of ancient Egyptian art in Europe.
