In Her Mirror: A Mother–Daughter Dialogue
Mother’s Day Special Screening & Discussion
What does it mean to "look" at a mother through the lens of a daughter? This Mother’s Day, we invite you to explore "Her Mirror", a curated selection of five documentary shorts by emerging Chinese female directors.
These visual diaries capture the raw, unspoken emotions of domestic life—from the quiet sacrifice of caregiving to the transformation of identity during migration. This event is a student-led initiative to foster intercultural dialogue and provide a platform for independent filmmakers. Becoming Mother (Dir. Dong Zhenjie) When a woman becomes a mother, must she surrender part of herself? This film records the director's daily life as a full-time mother, exploring the struggle modern women face between family and self.
Unseen Between Us (Dir. Chen Boyan) The mother is obsessed with taking group photos, while the daughter, struggling with appearance anxiety, avoids the lens. A reflection on whether love can exist beyond the frame.
Marginal Plants (Dir. Kikko Chen) After the father loses self-care ability, the mother becomes a daily caregiver, like a plant growing on a boundary. Can a daughter’s love grant the mother "permission to stop"?
Play Back (Dir. Baozhu) After her mother’s passing, a daughter repeatedly watches old footage, discovering that what her mother truly wanted was never what she had assumed.
As We Part, As We Return (Dir. Lynrina Li) A record of 40 days spent together by a mother and daughter in London, capturing a love that is "separated yet still connected."
