As part of the Digital Heritage Research Colloquium, Prof. Dr. Erik M. Champion from the University of South Australia Playful Cultures Lab will present a lecture titled “Critical Dimensions of 3D Heritage as an Immersive User Experience.”
Abstract:
Digital tools have great potential to preserve and communicate cultural significance, but they are often implemented as lifeless, static simulations rather than interactive, educational experiences. The future of digital heritage lies in making it participatory, educational, and sustainable. Key issues discussed include the ‘Vanishing Virtual’ (the rapid obsolescence of digital heritage projects); the lack of accessible, preserved 3D models; cultural agents; and ‘Culturally Significant Presence’ (emphasising the importance of users feeling immersed in a culturally meaningful environment, not just a realistic one). This talk will discuss how gamification and collaborative design techniques can both increase engagement and augment understanding of the challenges facing digital and physical heritage.
The lecture takes place on Thursday, 29 January 2026, at 18:00 c.t., in Lecture Hall A119, LMU Main Building, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1.
