LMU and Museum Fünf Kontinente digitize global collections into interactive 3D experiences via a web app.
In January of 2026, the LMU Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage Studies (IDCHS) and the Musuem Fünf Kontinente started a collaboration with provenance specialists Mr. Noam Gramlich and Mr. Richard Hölzl to digitize some unique objects from the museum’s collection to be used within a new web app that will be available to the visitor later this year.
This app will enhance the museum visit showing 3D models and digital information on visitors’ cellphone but also on the museum website to serve as a pre-visit and post-visit tool.
Prof. Dr. Lercari, Akademischer Rätin Dr. Elefheriadou, and PhD Candidate Mina Yacoub from the IDCSH team scanned eight objects representing collections from South America (including Amazonia and Peru), SWANA (Punjab and India), Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia, showcasing the global scope of the museum’s holdings using an Artec Leo and an Artec Spider II 3D scanner, and also took high-resolution photos for increasing texture quality and color fidelity
We hope this first collaboration we’ll lead to further joint initiatives between our institutions
