IDCH in the Field: A Summer of Palaeolithic Research

This summer, IDCH researcher Dr. Anastasia Eleftheriadou took part in two Palaeolithic excavations: at Suhi Dol rock-shelter in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azykh Cave in Azerbaijan.

In collaboration with Dr Tamara Dogandžić and Dr. João Marreiros, Dr. Eleftheriadou contributed to the creation of 3D models using photogrammetry, supporting the documentation of archaeological excavations and the organisation of laboratory work.

During her fieldwork in Azerbaijan, Dr. Eleftheriadou, on behalf of LMU, also joined a meeting between the Azykh excavation research team, including archaeologists from the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA), and representatives of the German Embassy in Baku. The meeting provided an opportunity for a stimulating exchange on German–Azerbaijani research collaboration and on how modern, interdisciplinary approaches are contributing to the study of human evolution at Azykh.

From fieldwork and 3D documentation to international research collaboration, the summer has been a productive one for advancing digital and interdisciplinary approaches to Palaeolithic archaeology.
