IDCHS and Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Painting Launch Laser Scanning Collaboration at the Munich Residenz

22 Dec 2025

A new collaboration between IDCHS and the Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Painting brings advanced laser scanning technology to the Munich Residenz, opening new perspectives for art historical research and heritage documentation.

The Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Painting, headed by Prof. Dr. Stephan Hoppe (LMU), began surveying Maximilian I's summer apartment in the Munich Residenz in December 2025, in collaboration with the Chair of Digital Cultural Heritage held by Prof. Dr. Nicola Lercari (LMU). The ground-floor rooms on Schwabinger Gasse (today Residenzstraße) are one of three locations where the young duke undertook a complete structural redesign of the court around 1600. The apartment featured a series of documented ceiling paintings by Peter Candid, some of which are preserved, others lost. This scanning campaign is one component of the Corpus's long-term research efforts on the Residenz. The Bavarian Palace Administration is gratefully acknowledged for its excellent and close cooperation.

The Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Paintings of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences
and Humanities is funded in the 'Academies' Program' of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities by the Federal Government of Germany as well as the states of Bavaria and Hesse.
