From Rome to Munich: a laser scan that unlocks new perspectives on the Ara Pacis.
Together with our project partner, the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke München, we undertook a new 3D-scanning campaign at the Museo dell’Ara Pacis in Rome.
As part of kultur.digital.strategie of the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst, we aim to foster the further contextualisation of cultural heritage objects—both digitally and physically.
Internationalisation through collaboration is at the heart of what we do, and so at the Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage Studies (LMU Munich), together with the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and the Museo dell’Ara Pacis, and with our partners at the “Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, München”, we were pleased to this week undertake the high-res 3D scanning of a model of the Ara Pacis at 1:10 scale with Prof. Nicola Lercari and Mirko De Tommassi.
The dataset will be for digital visualisation and printing in support of the making of a tactile 3D printed model for museum purposes. After completion we’d like to say a huge thanks to all at the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, München and all partners who have supported this work!
