LMU IDCHS and the State Museum for Egyptian Art Expand Ongoing 3D Digitization Collaboration

23 Jan 2026

LMU IDCHS and SMÄK expand their collaboration with 3D digitization of five ancient Egyptian objects.

In January of 2026, Prof. Dr. Lercari and Dr. Melanie Flossmann-Schutze launched a new collaboration between the LMU Institute for Digital Cultural Heritage Studies (IDCHS) and the State Museum for Egyptian Art (SMÄK) to 3D scan five unique objects from the museum’s collection to foster investigation of these unique ancient Egyptian objects.

This initiative showcases the continuing collaboration between our institutions, which has been ongoing since 2023, when various SMÄK coffins were scanned by the IDCHS team.

PhD Candidate Mina Yacoub and Akademischer Rätin Dr. Elefheriadou from the IDCSH team scanned the remaining coffin of princess Sat-Djhuty and a head of most likely a Hyksos ruler, using an Artec Leo 3D scanner. High resolution photos provided by the SMÄK were also added to the 3D models in post-processing for increasing texture quality and color fidelity.
