Sun Stones Chronicles (NOON) Project

In the 2020s, advanced technologies like 3D digitization, web visualization, and 3D printing have become essential tools in manufacturing and creative industries. Museums have also embraced these technologies to document, display, and study cultural objects in innovative ways. The NOON (suN stOnes chrONicles) project harnesses the latest in digitization technologies to enhance and transform the accessibility, preservation, and understanding of Danish cultural heritage, specifically focusing on the Bornholms Museum (BM) collection.

NOON aims to:

  • Digitize Danish Cultural Heritage: Employ state-of-the-art handheld structured light laser scanning to create digital replicas of the Bornholms Museum artifacts.
  • Enhance Online Accessibility: Utilize Web-GL visualization and semantic web technologies to make these digital artifacts accessible online.
  • Develop Best Practices: Create streamlined digitization procedures and best practices that can be adapted for future preservation efforts.
  • Integrate with Existing Databases: Ensure compatibility with existing government-funded cultural heritage databases.

Broader Impact

The project aspires to push the boundaries of museum and cultural heritage studies by:

  • Inspiring Diverse Audiences: Fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of Danish cultural heritage among a wide audience.
  • Preserving Cultural Legacy: Contributing to the long-term preservation of Scandinavian Neolithic artifacts.
  • Encouraging Research and Engagement: Providing new opportunities for exploration, research, and interaction with cultural artifacts.

Key Features

  • Digital Twins of Vasagård Collection: Highly detailed and accurate digital replicas of archaeological artifacts from Vasagård and Rispebjerg.
  • Open Access Online Portal: A platform with Semantic Web capabilities for exploring and interacting with the digitized collection.
  • Enhanced Digital Information: Adding symbolic and cultural interpretations to the digital replicas.
  • Interconnected Data Models: Using established models like the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model to link the collection to other online resources.

Collaboration and Future Vision

NOON is a collaborative effort aligned with the renewal and expansion initiatives of our Institute, the Bornholm Museum, the Bornholm Archaeological Research Center (BARC). The project aims to reach all audiences interested in Denmark and the Baltic Region's ancient history, ensuring that the digital preservation of these artifacts continues to inspire and educate future generations.
