Palenque - Digital Maya Heritage

This project aims to redefine the study and preservation of Maya archaeological heritage by promoting digital documentation in under-documented areas of Southern Mexico. In partnership with the Palenque Regional Project (PREP), it utilizes advanced methods like 3D visualization, high-speed networks, and mobile apps. These tools make 3D models and archaeological data accessible to visitors and local communities, enhancing public engagement and knowledge dissemination.

This project aims to define a new approach to the study and preservation of Maya archaeological heritage that can promote digital documentation methods of heritage sites and disseminate results in under-documented areas of Southern Mexico.

To achieve these goals, we have formed a powerful partnership with the Proyecto Regional Palenque (Palenque Regional Project—PREP), developed by Dr. Rodrigo Liendo Stuardo of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This collaboration also includes UC Berkeley, making it a truly collective effort.

As part of this project, we are experimenting with new methodologies of online data curation and dissemination as alternative means of dissemination for scholars, students, visitors, and local communities in Chiapas. This includes an open-access collection that features 3D visualization we developed in collaboration with the University of California San Diego Library through the 3D viewer Potree.
