General Principles of Enrollment and Registration for Examinations

You need to enroll online for the courses you want to take before the start of the lecture period. In contrast, you only have to register for examinations towards the end of the lecture period. Please keep the above-mentioned deadlines in mind, especially concerning the registration for examinations. In principle, the following applies to the registration for courses and subsequent registration for examinations:

  • A module must always be completed in full, i.e. including all (partial) courses and module (partial) examinations. Please bear this in mind when registering for courses and examinations.
  • Each module can only be included once in the degree program. Avoid double enrollments in modules that you have already completed or in several alternative courses in the same module during the enrollment process.
  • A module that has been registered once for examination must also be successfully completed. If a module or module partial examination is not passed, the module (or module part) must generally be repeated in the next semester in which it is offered. Depending on the course offerings, this may be the case in the following semester, or after two semesters.
  • Each examination registration is binding at the end of the registration period. It is not possible to deregister from examinations at a later date!
  • If you miss a registration for examinations, it is not possible to register for examinations at a later date, nor can courses or examinations be recognized for your certificate.
  • Please note whether you have to register for a module examination or for several partial module examinations.

For details on the various procedures, please see below.

Course Enrollment and Allocation of Places

You must enroll in the courses you want to take before the start of the lecture period with the online system LSF. You will generally have to enroll in a course by enrolling in the respective module.

However, for enrolling in elective courses included in the section “Topics for the Study of Cultures”, you will only find said courses if offered in English in the module catalogue in the LSF system. If you plan to take elective courses that are offered in German, please contact your study coordinator for more information on how to register for these courses.

After enrollment, the LSF system allocates places to students, but the results may be refined by the instructors. After places have been allocated, you can check the results and change your choices or unenroll. Find more detail about the course enrollment and places allocation process in the chart below.

Registration for Examinations

The registration of exams takes place in the later half of the lecture period. It is the most relevant deadline within the semester. The registration for exams is legally binding and may neither be revoked, nor completed after the end of the registration period. You have to register for exams using the LSF system.

The Examination Office for Humanities and Social Sciences (“Prüfungsamt für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften”, PAGS) is responsible for all questions relating to examination regulations and law. Please contact the responsible clerk, for the following questions in particular:

  • Notification of illness during examinations
  • Compensation for disadvantages during examinations

The Examinations Office also publishes all examination-relevant dates for the degree program.
