Intercultural Communication is an interdisciplinary field of research that brings together approaches from anthropology, linguistics, psychology, sociology, communication studies, and other disciplines. These different perspectives also shape intercultural training and consulting practice. However, the approaches used are sometimes based on very different assumptions about what culture and difference are, how mutual understanding is achieved, and what influences human behaviour. In practice, concepts and theories from different academic traditions are often combined, while their respective underlying assumptions and potential contradictions can easily be overlooked.
What does this mean for the design and implementation of intercultural training? Is the diversity of approaches primarily a resource, or should it also be viewed critically? Following a brief introductory presentation, researchers, trainers and consultants, as well as Master's students in Intercultural Communication, will discuss these questions at several World Café tables.
Online participation is also possible. A separate discussion table will be set up for participants joining via Zoom. The access link will be provided upon registration.
