About the Programme

The Volkswagen Momentum Fellowship Programme aims to foster dialogue between fields of research that have traditionally approached the pre-modern and modern periods separately. It supports interdisciplinary approaches that explore long-term historical developments and investigate how pre-modern and modern perspectives can mutually inform and enrich one another.

Geographic Scope

The programme focuses on Jewish history, culture, and communities in the Middle East and North Africa, with particular emphasis on the early modern and modern periods.

It seeks to strengthen perspectives on Jewish history that move beyond predominantly European and Ashkenazi-centred historiographical frameworks, bringing the experiences and cultural traditions of Jewish communities in these regions to the forefront.

Research Focus

The programme welcomes a broad range of disciplinary and methodological approaches, particularly from the following fields:

  • History
  • Anthropology and Sociology
  • Political Science and Law
  • Philology and Religious Studies

Interdisciplinary projects that bridge conventional chronological and disciplinary boundaries are particularly encouraged.
