The summer school is designed for students of Sanskrit and Indian culture, who wish to have a first-hand experience of classical Sanskrit theatre as still performed in Kerala in the regional tradition of Kutiyattam. Students will take part in a 10 days-festival of Kutiyattam theatre, during which the play Māyāsītāṅkam (“The Act of Sītā in Disguise”), third Act of Śaktibhadra’s Āścaryacūḍāmaṇi (“The Marvel of a Jewel”) will be presented. This celebrated Sanskrit-Prakrit Kerala play will be performed by the music and theatre ensemble Nepathya, directed by Margi Madhu Chakyar. The daily performances will be accompanied by reading sessions of the original play in Sanskrit, explanations on the acting (abhinaya) by the actors, as well as common thematic discussions. A day tour of the rich heritage sites in the Kochi region is also planned.
The summer school is open to BA, MA and PhD students. The ECTS points and the examination comply with the study and examination regulations of the particular degree program.
The performances will take place in Moozhikulam, situated 10 km from Cochin International Airport. Different types of accommodation are available in proximity, upon request.
The number of places being limited, participants are advised to apply as soon as possible with a letter of motivation.
