Teaching Collection
The teaching collection of the Archaeological Institute is a central component of practice-oriented education and combines theoretical content with direct work on objects.
It offers students the opportunity to learn about archaeological finds firsthand and examine them systematically. Original objects are used to clearly illustrate materials, manufacturing techniques, signs of wear, and states of preservation. The collection serves as a means of practicing basic scientific methods such as identification, typology, dating, and documentation.
Through direct contact with the artifacts, students develop a trained eye for form, function, and craftsmanship details. At the same time, they learn to interpret finds in their cultural-historical and temporal context.
The teaching collection provides targeted preparation for practical work in museums, monument preservation, and archaeological fieldwork. It also supports training in drawing, photographing, and describing objects. Responsible handling of original cultural assets promotes awareness of the protection and significance of archaeological heritage. The teaching collection thus makes a significant contribution to sound and practical archaeological teaching.
