Laser Aided Profiler

A Laser Aided Profiler is a portable optical scanning system for archaeologists that records ceramic finds quickly and digitally – including precise profile drawings and high-resolution photographs. It is robust, efficient, and ideal for documentation-intensive research. The recorded research data can then be directly imported into a database and further analyzed there.

The Laser Aided Profiler (LAP) is an innovative documentation device specifically developed for archaeological work with ceramic finds. It enables sherds and vessel fragments to be recorded quickly, precisely, and fully digitally. While in traditional archaeology profile drawings are laboriously produced by hand, the LAP allows automated recording: two lasers project lines onto the break edge of the object, which are captured by cameras. From these data, an exact digital profile is generated in real time. At the same time, an integrated camera takes high-resolution color photographs of the object.

The resulting data can be imported directly into databases and further processed there—for example for comparisons, statistical analyses, or publication. The device is also extremely robust in design: it operates without moving parts, is tolerant of dust and heat, and can be used both in the laboratory and directly on excavations. Weighing under 7 kg, the LAP is easy to transport and ready for use within minutes.

Our institute has two of these devices, which are regularly used in research projects. In addition, they are available to students who wish to use the LAP for recording finds as part of practical courses or their own work. This allows students to gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art archaeological documentation technology during their studies.
