The discovery of the grave of a young woman who had been buried over 4,000 years ago on a river terrace in Schwabmünchen prompted an experiment designed to determine how very small tin beads with holes might have been produced in the Early Bronze Age: As was determined during the restoration process, a cape and a hood had been intricately embroidered with tiny tin beads. This was a significant discovery, as the working of tin represented a technological innovation on the path to bronze production.
The research included traditional archaeological methods, comparisons with other Early Bronze Age graves in which tin was found, and anthropological analysis of the woman and the individuals buried alongside her. Unlike other archaeological studies, this volume also includes a comprehensive account of the restoration work, as well as metal and strontium isotope analysis.
