Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology / Prehistoric and Early Medieval Archeology

As the archaeology of Old Europe, Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology is a historical and cultural discipline that deals with the archaeological sources of Europe and, at times, neighboring continents, from the first appearance of humans as historical beings in the Paleolithic around 2 million years ago up to the point of sufficient written records in the Early and High Middle Ages. For the most part, this involves cultures without their own written testimonies. Increasingly, however, the archaeology of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period is also being considered as subfields of the discipline.

Archeology of the Roman Provinces

Provincial Roman Archaeology is understood as a discipline of Classical and historical studies. It deals with the history, material culture, and civilization of the provinces of the Roman Empire, especially those of the Latin-speaking West (e.g. along the Rhine and Danube, in England, France, Spain, and North Africa from Morocco to Libya). The chronological framework is defined by the beginning and end of the military and civil administration of the respective province, i.e. from the late Republic (2nd/1st century BC) to Late Antiquity.
